Are You Too Sensitive?

The causes of sensitive skin are many, and it’s often hard to identify exactly which ingredients or conditions you are reacting to. Irritant dermatitis is a condition that causes skin to react to an irritant in a product. The most common irritants are fragrances, which are found in most popular skincare and hair care products, as well as in soaps, detergents and moisturizers.

Then there are allergens, a whole other class of irritants that can cause inflammation and rashes for those who have allergic contact dermatitis. These include nickel (found in most eyeglass frames, for example) and rubber (in boots and gloves), for example.

Tips for Soothing Sensitive Skin
1.
Avoid choosing products with fragrances, the most common cause of sensitive skin irritation.
2. Watch out for additives that could irritate–“botanicals,” “extracts,” chemicals, even vitamins.
3. Check the label to make sure the products you choose are “non-comedogenic”–that means they don’t clog the pores and cause blemishes.
4. If you have trouble with adult acne, look for “non-acnegenic,” too.
5. Avoid products that contain dyes or other colorants. These ingredients can cause skin reactions.
6. Soap can be harsh on sensitive skin. Try to choose a non-soap cleanser. Avoid grains or other scrubbing foreign materials.
7. Be gentle with your skin. Use warm, not hot, water and pat dry with a soft towel to avoid irritation.
8. Avoid piling on too many products at once–or trying several new ones in a row. That makes it harder to identify an irritant if you do have a reaction.
9. If you have an itchy reaction, try not to scratch. Scratching actually irritates nerve endings, and increases the itch. Use a moisturizing itch-relief product instead– preferably one designed for sensitive skin.
10. Once you’ve found a product that works, try to stick to it. It’s tempting to play at the cosmetic counter–but your skin may pay the price, if you do!
